{"id":990544,"date":"2025-06-02T20:08:56","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T09:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ohrc.om\/en\/?p=990544"},"modified":"2026-05-25T18:13:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T07:13:18","slug":"oman-human-rights-commission-concludes-participation-in-conference-on-artificial-intelligence-and-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ohrc.om\/en\/oman-human-rights-commission-concludes-participation-in-conference-on-artificial-intelligence-and-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Oman Human Rights Commission Concludes Participation in Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission, headed by Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, Chair of the Commission, concluded its participation in the international conference titled \u201cArtificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Opportunities, Risks, and Visions for a Better Future.\u201d The event was organized by the National Human Rights Committee of the State of Qatar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the National Cyber Security Agency, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), Huawei, and other international actors in the field of digital technologies and tools. The conference, held in the Qatari capital, Doha, was attended by more than 1,200 officials, specialists, and experts.\r\n\r\n
\r\n \r\n
\r\nThe Conference addressed twelve main topics, including the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI), such as machine learning and natural language processing. It also covered the impact of AI on personal data, surveillance, and privacy rights, in addition to issues of bias and discrimination, freedom of expression, content moderation, censorship, and safeguarding freedom of speech. Other key topics included AI governance and accountability, human rights-based rulemaking, transparency, and redress mechanisms.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\nFurther discussions covered digital access and justice, ensuring equitable access to AI resources and preventing the digital divide. One track, titled \u201cAI for Good,\u201d focused on harnessing the positive applications of AI in sectors such as health, justice, environment, and education.\r\n\r\n

\r\nParticipating experts also explored legal and ethical frameworks, including laws, policies, and ethical standards for the responsible use of AI. A dedicated session focused on security, armed conflict, and ensuring human rights, along with discussions on how emerging technologies can enhance inclusive participation.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\nThe participants also addressed the future of media in the context of AI from a human rights perspective, emphasizing both the risks and innovations. They explored AI-driven transformations in employment and labor opportunities, and their implications for workers\u2019 rights and economic inequality.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nThe Conference\u2019s final recommendations emphasized the need to place human rights at the core of AI development, deployment, and regulation. It called for global AI governance to address the broad and profound potential impacts of AI on human rights. The recommendations also stressed the importance of meaningful participation by a diverse range of stakeholders\u2014including women, youth, and persons with disabilities\u2014in the design and governance of AI systems at national, regional, and international levels, in line with the International Human rRghts Law.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nThe Commission\u2019s delegation included lawyer Ms. Maimoona bint Said Al-Sulaimaniyah, member of the Commission; Ms. Labeeba bint Mohammed Al-Maawaliah, member of the Commission; and Mr. Said bin Mohammed Al-Nadabi, Head of Public Relations at the Oman Human Rights Commission.\r\n\r\n
