The Ceremony was held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud Al-Harthi and attended by representatives of government entities, the private sector and civil society organisations.\r\n

\r\nSaud bin Saleh Al-Maawali, Deputy Chairperson of OHRC, delivered the Commission\u2019s address at the Ceremony. He stressed the importance of the occasion as an opportunity to assess joint national efforts and the progress made in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities generally, and persons with hearing disabilities in particular. He explained that promoting sign language helps ensure their right to express their views, access essential services such as healthcare and education, and participate fully in society on an equal basis with others.\r\n

\r\nIn its address, OHRC outlined its practical efforts to empower persons with hearing disabilities. The Commission has trained a number of its employees in sign language so they can communicate directly and effectively with people seeking its services.\r\n

\r\nOHRC has also partnered with the Communication Training Institute to provide sign language training to staff at several institutions. The courses aim to equip employees with sign language communication skills and enable them to provide prompt, equitable and respectful services to persons with hearing disabilities in healthcare and other service facilities.\r\n

\r\nThe Commission highlighted its awareness efforts, including producing and sharing educational videos with sign language interpretation through its digital platforms and video channel. These materials explain the legal protections and services available to persons with disabilities. OHRC has also worked to bring its website into line with international digital accessibility standards, enabling users to browse content, access services, and submit reports and complaints independently and with ease.\r\n

\r\nThe Deputy Chairperson commended the legislative and institutional progress made by the Sultanate of Oman, from the enactment of the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which provides for a comprehensive range of civil, educational, health, social and rehabilitation rights, to the Royal directives to establish a sector at undersecretary level within the Ministry of Social Development to oversee and advance work in this area. He reaffirmed OHRC\u2019s commitment to strategic partnerships and continued cooperation with government entities, the private sector and civil society organisations.\r\n
