In cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development, the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) offer an awareness lecture on child abuse and neglect in Sohar
The Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC organized an awareness lecture on child protection from neglect and abuse. The event was held at the Oman Women’s Association in Sohar Governorate. The lecture was attended by Her Excellency Dr/ Fadela bint Abdullah Al-Rahailiya, member of the Shura Council, and President of the Omani Women’s Association in Sohar, Ms/ Labiba bint Muhammad Al-Ma’awally, member of the OHRC and expert on women’s affairs in the Ministry of Social Development, and a group of stakeholders and targeted segments of the society Al Batinah North Governorate. The lecture aimed at promoting the right of the child to protection from neglect and abuse, to introduce the legal and regulatory frameworks for the Child protection, and to understand the procedures adopted to report abuse and neglect through the means available at the Ministry of Social Development and other concerned authorities. The lecture also introduced the efforts of the OHRC, its role and contribution in this aspect, while reviewing some situations related to issues of child neglect and abuse, and the procedures followed to address the same. As the lecture started, Ms/ Khazina bint Muslim Al-Rahbiah of the OHRC introduced the law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the awareness and education programs implemented by the Commission to reduce cases of Child abuse and neglect, and how segments of the society can communicate with the Commission to report such cases. She also explained the measures and precautions that should be considered to reduce these cases. A series of videos were played with the aim of educating the community on this topic. In the second topic of the lecture, Mr/ Imad bin Muhammad Al-Saidi from the Ministry of Social Development provided an introduction on the mechanisms followed in the Ministry of Social Development regarding child protection from abuse and neglect, which include physical, psychological, sexual abuse, and neglect in its various forms, in addition to the parameters that might refer to the fact that the child was exposed to abuse. Thereafter, the speaker discussed the competencies of the protection committees in the various Governorates, the mechanisms of communication and reporting, and the cases that the child protection committees are handling. The organization of these awareness lectures in the various Governorates of the Sultanate of Oman comes to reflect the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Social Development in the context of its continuous interest in protecting the child and their Rights. These lectures also reflect the role of the OHRC in cooperation and coordination with the concerned authorities in order to achieve common goals and determine the common responsibilities in the field of Human Rights.
