NHRC Concludes a Training Course for SQU Students
Group of students from the Social and Sociology Department at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) concluded a training course in the field of human rights conducted by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in cooperation with Geneva Institute for Human Rights on 17 September 2015. The program aimed to raise the awareness about human rights, identify the national, regional, and international mechanisms of human rights protection, as well as the international contractual and non-contractual human rights mechanisms. In addition, the trainers explained the main international human rights conventions, NHRC role and jurisdiction in relation to disseminating the culture of human rights, the mechanism of monitoring and complaints receiving, the United Nations systems and procedures, and the rights of children and women. At the end of the course, Dr. Obaid Said Al Shaqsi, NHRC general secretary, expressed his appreciation to the participants, congratulated them on completing the course successfully, and advised them to continue educating themselves in the field of human rights. On the other hand, the students thanked the Commission for the initiative and for giving them the opportunity to be the first group of SQU students that have been trained in the field of human rights.
