NHRC Holds its Final Meeting and Submits the Annual Report
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held its final meeting of the third annual session for the second period in the presence of his Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoodh Al Manthari, chairman of the State Council, the honorable Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Riyami, NHRC chairman, his Excellency the Ambassador Amer bin Hamad Al Hajri, NHRC vice-chairman, and Dr. Obaid bin Said Al Shaqsi, NHRC secretary general, at the State Council. During the meeting, NHRC chairman submitted the Commission’s annual report 2015 to his Excellency the chairman of the State Council, as part of the Commission’s mandate stated in article (11) in the Royal Decree No. (124/2008) that stipulated the roles of the Commission including preparing an annual report to be presented to His Majesty the Sultan through the chairman of the State Council. The report elucidated the progress of human rights status in the Sultanate in 2015 in relation to the three human rights generations; civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, and environmental and developmental rights. It also explored the Commission’s activities and programs in relation to building the abilities of its employees, disseminating the culture of human rights, promoting its relations with the regional and international organizations. At the beginning of the meeting, NHRC chairman thanked the Commission’s members, the secretariat general, and the employees for their efforts exerted in the second period; and their contribution in laying the foundation of human rights culture in the Sultanate. The honorable also praised the activities and programs that were undertaken by the Commission including the endeavors to educate the society about human rights and monitor any violations. On the other hand, his Excellency the chairman of the State Council delivered a speech in which he praised the efforts of NHRC chairman and members that resulted in realizing the vision of his Majesty the Sultan. He also stated that the Commission succeeded in communicating with the society and institutions through its various activities and programs and everyone seems to realize the roles of NHRC in relation to human rights. In Addition, his Excellency praised the efforts of the Commission to acquire status (B) in the International Coordinating Committee of Human Rights. At the end of his speech, the chairman of the State Council commended the latest publication by NHRC, “Human Rights in the Royal Speeches”, confirming that his Majesty has paid close attention to human rights since the beginning of the renaissance. At the end of the meeting, His Excellency Dr. Yahya Al Manthari honored NHRC chairman, the vice-chairman, NHRC members, and the secretary general.
