A team of the OHRC visited Sohar Royal Oman Police detention department; this comes in the context of monitoring the humanitarian condition of the detainees and the services provided to them under the relevant applicable laws in the Sultanate of Oman.
The Commission’ team heard the Sohar Detention Department Director as the later offered a detailed brief in which he clarified the detention department work mechanism, the detention department competencies, services provided to the detainees, health care services provided, catering services, and methods of handling detainees who suffer from chronic diseases or must follow a specific diet due to their health condition.
Thereafter, the team conducted a tour within the detention department in which the team inspected various sections of the department, including the guest reception section, the medical clinic. During the tour, the team got acquainted with the procedures for the detainees’ parent visits, how the detainees are able to contact with the parents and attorneys who follow up their cases. Also, the team inspected the health services that are provided to the detainees by a specialized team who follow up the health care conditions of the detainees.
In this visit, the Commission was represented by a group of its members and employees who were received by Colonel/ Saeed bin Muhammad Al Jabri, Assistant Commander of Al Batinah North Police, Colonel/ Ali bin Hassan bin Saleh Al Balushi, Director General of Prisons, Lt. Col./ Matar bin Hamad Al Makhmari, Director of Operations at Al Batinah North Police Command, and Lt. Col./ Ali bin Marhoon Al Hashimi, Director of the Sohar Detention Department.
