Dr. Rashid bin Hamad Al-Balushi, the OHRC Chairman, welcomed a delegation from the British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union “BGIPU”, which is paying an official visit to the Sultanate of Oman. During the meeting, the delegation was acquainted with the OHRC work, its operational framework, and its role in following up and monitoring international reports, verifying the information contained therein, and coordinating with the concerned authorities to respond to them.
Furthermore, the BGIPU delegation was briefed on the OHRC role in promoting and protecting human rights, including its role in monitoring any violations or abuses related to human rights in the Sultanate of Oman. This encompasses facilitating the resolution of such issues and conducting on-site visits to prisons, detention centers, hospitals, and labor sites to monitor the human rights conditions. The BGIPU delegation highlighted the alignment between the operational framework of the OHRC and that of the Equality and Human Rights Commission “ EHRC” in the United Kingdom.
Notably, the latter holds accreditation at Level (A) within the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions “GANHRI”, tasked with monitoring and addressing human rights abuses while facilitating their resolution and settlement.
The delegation expressed its willingness to enhance collaboration with the OHRC on human rights matters. The meeting was attended by Lawyer Saud bin Saleh Al-Mawali, the OHRC Vice-Chairman, Lawyer Mohammed bin Ali Al-Marzouqi, Chairman of the Committee on International Cooperation, and Shatha bint Abdul Majeed Al-Zadjali, Director of the OHRC Department of International Organizations and Relations.
