A delegation from the OHRC charied by Honorable Sheikh/ Abdullah bin Shween Al Hosani, Chairman of the OHRC, participated in the conference on the “Integration of Human Rights in Public Policies” and the General Assembly meeting of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The conference witnessed a wide participation of representatives of the OHCHR, the United Nations Development Program and the Arab Institute for Human Rights. The conference was attended by representatives of all national institutions that are members of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI), and civil society organizations.
The conference aimed at emphasizing the importance of human rights, sustainable development plans, enhancing awareness and education for various segments of society, enhancing the capacities of those working in monitoring and follow-up, and proposing programs to build and raise capacities for human rights defenders.
During the conference, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions and the United Nations Center for Training and Documentation in the Field of Human Rights for Southwest Asia and the Arab Region.
The main session of the conference was dedicated to discussing the transcendence of international standards over national law when States join international treaties, the role of legislative bodies in adopting a human rights-based approach in public policies, and the role of international treaty and non-treaty mechanisms in developing and strengthening the system of monitoring and considering human rights in public policies. Mr. Moather bin Ahmed Al-Siyabi was chosen to represent the OHRC, in addition to the election of Mr. Muhammad bin Ahmed Al-Rawahi, a member of the OHRC, to be part of the conference’s drafting committee.
In parallel with the conference, the nineteenth general assembly meeting of the Arab Network for Human Rights Institutions was held, during which the annual report of the network was ratified, and the action plan of the network for the current year was reviewed. Also during the meeting, the participants discussed the Arab Network recommendation regarding the Palestinian issue, the progress in the process of accrediting Arab institutions with Sub-committee on accreditation, and the possibility of establishing a national human rights institution in Somalia.
The delegation was formed by Mr/ Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Rawahi, member of the Commission, Mr/ Saeed bin Saleh Al-Abri, director of the Communication and Information Department, And Mr/ Moather bin Ahmed Al-Siyabi, the Department of Organizations and International Relations at the OHRC.
