The Oman Human Rights Commission visits the Central Prison in Samail

A delegation headed by Honorable Sheikh Abdullah bin Shuwain Al Hosni, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, made a field visit to the Central Prison in Samail. This initiative comes within the framework of the visits carried out by the Commission to prisons and detention centers in the various governorates of the Sultanate. The delegation included members of the Commission and some of its managers and specialized staff. At the beginning of the visit, the Commission delegation met with Colonel Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Mahrazi, Director General of Prisons, and several officers and individuals in charge of prison affairs. At the beginning of the meeting, the Director General of Prisons welcomed the delegation of the Commission and confirmed that the prison administration adheres to the basic principles of the treatment of prisoners, and international conventions on human rights in this regard. He also reviewed, through a visual presentation, the services provided to prisoners which include health, educational, legal, sports, training, entertainment and practicing of their hobbies. Colonel General Director of Prisons also explained to the delegation some aspects of the health services provided to prisoners according to their medical conditions, which include the initial medical examination for each prisoner, the provision of medical aids to the prisoners, treatment of addiction, and the provision of psychological sessions through a group of psychologists. He also explained the services provided to prisoners’ children less than two years old, and HIV patients. He also highlighted the medical treatment provided for the mentally ill and the emergency treatment. On the educational side, the Director General of Prisons clarified that prisoners can continue basic education in coordination with the Ministry of Education. To this end, they are provided with curricula, educational supplies, and everything that they need to complete their study to get a general diploma certificate. The Director General of Prisons also explained how prisoners are trained on some of the traditional local crafts. They are also provided with courses in English, computer and marketing, and professional safety courses. They also get courses in memorizing and reciting the Holy Quran. With regard to family visits to prisoners, the Director General of Prisons has confirmed that this is done every two weeks for the prisoner’s families, in addition to providing phone calls with his family, subscribing to daily newspapers, providing radio and television listening services in various prison facilities, and holding a series of religious lectures in cooperation with some government institutions. On his part, Sheikh, Chairman of the Commission and members of the delegation thanked the prison administration for its permanent facilitation of the Commission’s visits to the central prison. He also talked about the tasks and work of the Commission, and the functions assigned to it. The delegation of the Commission visited the prison for men and met with a group of prisoners and spoke to them about all topics related to the services provided to them at the prison headquarters and listened to their impression about the services provided to them. The delegation also visited the women’s prison, the prison hospital, and got acquainted with its departments and the services it provides. It also visited the exhibition devoted to the products of prisoners, which includes traditional ships, various sculptures on wood, pottery, and paintings, in addition to fashion and traditional industries. The Oman Human Rights Commission, in building the services and care it has been provided to the prisoners of the central prison, extends its thanks and appreciation to His Excellency the Inspector General of Police and Customs for the cooperation and facilities provided to carry out their duties in this regard. The Commission also thanks the administration of the Central Prison and the prison staff for their continuous cooperation and coordination with the Commission, and their facilitation of field visits implemented by the Commission to the prison. The Commission also affirmed its continued communication and coordination with the various authorities concerned with everything that serves human rights in the Sultanate.
