Lecturers from the Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC emphasized the importance of awareness and education programs to reduce cases of Child abuse and neglect, in addition to expanding the circle of stakeholders to include various segments of society. The lecturers called upon family and community efforts to reduce cases of abuse and neglect, which resulted in a number of serious incidents during the past period.
This took place during the joint awareness program that was held in the hall of the Oman College of Management and Technology, and was implemented by the Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC in partnership with the Omani Women’s Association in Barka. The event was attended by wide range of members of Omani Women’s Associations in Al Batinah South Governorate, representatives of government departments and institutions, and the civil society institutions of Al Batinah South Governorate.
The awareness programme aim is to promote awareness and education about children’s rights, highlight cases of abuse and neglect, and how to address the same, address their causes and reduce their possibility. The Programme also aims to introduce the bodies concerned with receiving and monitoring reports on children’s rights, and how to contact them. It also aims to report on any cases that are monitored, in addition to introducing the Children’s Law, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the measures adopted by the Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC when receiving or monitoring any communication related to children’s rights.
The awareness program included the presentation of a series of awareness films produced by the OHRC with the aim of educating members of society about cases of neglect and abuse, in addition to the distribution of a series of printed publications that define the rights of the child, and clarify an aspect of the procedures and means that should be followed to reduce cases of abuse and neglect against the Child.
