His Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Mahfouz Al-Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council, met with their Excellencies, distinguished members of the Oman Human Rights Commission, during his visit to the Commission’s headquarters.
His Excellency the Chairman of the State Council congratulated the Chairman and members of the Commission on the high trust that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said gave them – by appointing members for the fourth period of the Commission’s march that was established under the Royal Decree No. 124/2008.
He wished the members success in carrying out their duties related to monitoring and safeguarding human rights in the Sultanate, as well as interaction and response to regional and international organizations and bodies concerned with human rights, and its goals in the world
The Chairman and members of the “Oman Human Rights Commission” expressed their gratitude to the Chairman of the State Council for the meeting. They expressed their praise to His Majesty the Sultan and affirmed their intention to exert more effort to serve the Commission and its goals. They also reiterated that they will leave no stone unturned to achieve cooperation and coordination with the competent authorities to protect human rights in the Sultanate.
On the other hand, the Oman Human Rights Commission held its first meeting under the chairmanship of Honorable Sheikh Abdullah bin Shuwain Al Hosni, Chairman of the Commission, in the presence of its members, and directors of departments and offices of the Commission.
The meeting reviewed the tasks and powers of the Commission in accordance with the basic statute of the State, international covenants and conventions, and its role in following up international reports, coordinating with the relevant authorities to verify and respond to such reports.
The directors of the Commission’s departments and offices also gave a brief presentation on the tasks and competencies of the various committees and offices of the Commission. They also presented statistics on monitoring and notifications. They also touched on the Commission’s field visits, publications and media materials produced during the past period, in order to familiarize members with all the tasks and activities of the Commission and its responsibilities.
