OHRC Chairman: What is happening in Gaza is a Crime Against Humanity
Chairman of Oman Human Rights Commission, Professor Dr./ Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi said that celebrating the 75th anniversary of International Human Rights Day comes in the shadow of what is happening in the Palestinian Teriorities, particularly in Gaza which is considered a crime against humanity and a gross violation of international humanitarian norms stipulated by the United Nations, since the killing, displacement and deportation of civilians, including children, the elderly, women and men, and bombing of hospitals and schools, is not accepted by any custom or supported by any law. It is a clear violation of the principles of human rights that must be respected in peace and war.

This also violates Articles 5 and 6 of the International Criminal Court’s statute regarding genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The OHRC Chairman stressed that the international community should assume its responsibilities and obligations towards the Palestinian problem, and quickly find radical solutions to achieve the hopes of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state, and to provide the humanitarian needs necessary for life to the Palestinian people, especially those besieged in Gaza. He praised the permanent stand of the Sultanate of Oman and its full and clear support for the rights of the Palestinian people, and ending the occupation imposed on them, as well as their right to establish their state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and implementing United Nations resolutions in order to achieve justice, peace and security for everyone. The Omani Human Rights Commission participated in the meeting with His Excellency Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights, as part of a high-level delegation from the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions at the Wilson Palace in Geneva, Switzerland.

During the meeting, the need to unify efforts between the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to coordinate with the competent authorities to create safe corridors for the entry of aid agencies and their workers was emphasized, and the need for the High Commissioner for Human Rights to stand firm against the violations of the occupation authorities being the international official concerned with human rights at the United Nations.  Furthermore, the need to end duplication in dealing with human rights issues, ensure that Palestinian citizens enjoy the same rights as citizens in other countries and that the United Nations takes the same measures that it has taken in various armed conflicts was emphasized.
