Led by Prof. Rashid bin Hamad Al-Balushi, the Chairperson of the OHRC, a delegation from the OHRC headed participated in the meetings of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions “GANHRIs “and the International Alliance Conference at the UN Palace in Genva .
During the meeting, discussions encompassed the strategic plan of GANHRI, the challenges confronting National Human Rights Institutions “NHRIs”, the international accreditation mechanism for NHRIs, and the promotion of joint work among the regional networks of the GANHRI.
Representatives from Human Rights Institutions and Committees across various countries worldwide participated in the meetings convened in Geneva. The GANHRI meetings offer a platform to exchange experiences, share best practices, review human rights-related work, and make decisions on shared issues among NHRIs affiliated with GANHRI.
GANHRI Annual Conference of this year was dedicated to deliberating on business and human rights, emphasizing the role of NHRIs. Discussions also revolved around the outcomes of the 14th International Conference, particularly the Kiev-Copenhagen Declaration on Torture and Other Ill-treatment. Additionally, attention was given to the role of NHRIs in protecting and promoting the rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and stateless persons, as well as discussions on the Global Compact on Refugees.
Furthermore, the OHRC delegation took part in the Executive Committee meeting of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRIs), which convened alongside the GANHRI Conference and Meeting in Geneva. The meeting encompassed a review of the ANNHRIs work program for 2024, discussions on strategies to offer guidance and support to Arab National Institutions within the GANHRI accreditation sub-committee, and updates on recent efforts and developments concerning the Palestinian issue. Additionally, the meeting extended support to the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) in the State of Palestine and updated the ANNHRIs strategy for the forthcoming years.
The membership of the delegation representing the OHRC included Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Barashdi, Chairperson of the Monitoring and Complaints Committee, lawyer Mohammed bin Ali Al-Marzouqi, Chairperson of the International Cooperation Committee, Mr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al-Rashidi, Director of the Monitoring and Receiving Reports Department, and Ms. Shatha bint Abdul Majeed Al-Zadjaliya, Director of the Department of International Organizations and Relations at the OHRC.
