The Oman Human Rights Commission expresses its deep concern over the attack on the Global Freedom Flotilla in international waters and the arrest of its participants by the Israeli authorities. This act constitutes a violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, particularly given the flotilla’s peaceful mission to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid, an honorable effort aimed at breaking the blockade and alleviating the ongoing suffering of civilians trapped in the area.
The Commission affirms that the continued Israeli assaults constitute a violation of fundamental rights and freedoms, as well as of the provisions of international humanitarian law, which guarantees the protection of civilians during conflicts.
It calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, ensuring their safety, and facilitating their return to their respective countries.
In this regard, the Commission is closely following the efforts undertaken by the official authorities in the Sultanate of Oman to ensure the safety of the Omani citizens participating in the flotilla and to secure their return home.
The Commission is also coordinating a unified position with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions and is working to address the relevant United Nations mechanisms to ensure their release, including the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
