A delegation from OHRC, headed by Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al-Kalbani, Secretary-General of OHRC, participated in the regional conference on the role of the media in enhancing the integrity and credibility of the electoral process, which was held in the Mauritanian Capital, Nouakchott.
The conference aimed to discuss the best ways to enhance transparency and credibility in elections, clarify the important role that the media can play in this, strengthen the relationship between electoral and media administrations, activate the different roles played by the media, including social media, in addition to exchanging experiences about the best practices to combat fake news during elections, and activating the role of the media in educating voters and training them to exercise the right to the electoral process.
During the conference, the Secretary-General of OHRC Dr. Ali Al-Kalbani presented a working paper in which he explained to the participants the definition and limits of freedom of opinion and expression. He also talked about electronic communication platforms, the positive roles they can play, their negative aspects, and the role they can play during elections. He also presented examples of Arab systems and constitutions that guarantee freedom of opinion and expression, including the Sultanate’s Basic Law.
OHRC delegation included Ahmed bin Ali Al Shafei, Monitoring Specialist at OHRC, and Said bin Mohammed Al-Nadabi from the Public Relations and Media Department.
