A team from the OHRC visited the Detention Department in Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate in Wilayat Ibra’; as part of the field visits carried out by the OHRC to prisons and detention centers in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman to understand the Human Rights conditions of detainees and inmates.
During the visit, the OHRC team was briefed on the services provided to the detainees and the mechanisms by which they are treated. The team also received detailed explanation about the nutrition provided to the detainees, the health services provided according to the cases, and the method by which emergencies are handled.
During the visit, the Commission team also made a tour of the sections and facilities of the Detention Department, met with the women in detention, heard their statements, and inspected the services provided to them. The team examined the humanitarian aspects, and the conditions and controls in force in this department.
On this visit, the OHRC was represented by a team consisting of a number of its members and employees: During its visit to the Detention Department in Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate, the team met with Brigadier General/ Suleiman bin Mohammed Al-Alawi, Commander of the Police of Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate, Colonel/ Ali bin Hassan Al-Balushi, Director General of the General Department of Prisons, Lieutenant Colonel/ Khalid bin Khalfan Al-Rahbi, Assistant Commander of the Police of Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate, Lieutenant Colonel/ Salim bin Saif Al-Hashimi, Director of Police Operations in Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate, Lieutenant Colonel/ Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Gharibi, Director of Operations and Security in the General Department of Prisons, and Lieutenant Colonel/ Badr bin Nasser Al-Feliti, Director of Detention in Ash Sharqiyah North Governorate.
At the end of its visits to the Detention Centers and prisons during this period, the OHRC would like to extends its acknowledgment and appreciation to the Royal Oman Police and, in particular, to the General Directorate of Prisons for their constant cooperation with the Commission and for enabling it to carry out its tasks.
