The Forum on “the Role of National Mechanisms in Promoting and Protecting Human Rights” was concluded, with the grace of Allah, today, Tuesday, 7th of Dhul-Qa’dah 1443 AH, corresponding to June 7th 2022, which was held (6-7 June 2022) in the capital “Muscat”. The Forum was organized by the OHRC in cooperation with the “Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions”, its sessions lasted for two days.
The Forum was held to review the efforts, exchange best practices and examine the best methods to overcome challenges towards optimal implementation of the contents of regional and international treaties, and to strengthen cooperation mechanisms at the national and international levels. It was also reviewed in the Forum the successful experiences shared between the participating parties in various fields of human rights.
The Forum content was nourished by a group of representatives of government and national agencies and civil society, in addition to experts from the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI). The paper study speakers reflected topics introducing the (NHRCI), the foundations for establishing the national institutions, activities and responsibilities of the OHRC in promoting and protecting Human Rights at the national level, and its role in the field of cooperation and coordination with regional and international Human Rights organizations.
Also, the Forum speakers referred to the responsibilities and efforts of government institutions to protect and promote human rights in terms of harmonizing national legislation with international conventions and treaties, with a presentation of the most prominent human rights issues and model rules for the treatment of inmates, with an explanation of government efforts regarding the protection of the rights of the most vulnerable groups.
In the context of the civil society associations roles, the objectives/ responsibilities of associations, the challenges and mechanisms for working with them were discussed.
As the OHRC appreciates this cooperation and response from all the parties that participated in the activities of the Forum to contribute in raising the efficiency of the law enforcement bodies in order to enhance the goals of human rights protection. This should also achieve the strategic goal of a society whose members are responsible, aware of their rights, and are committed to their duties in implementation of the objectives of (Oman Vision 2040) with an emphasis on continuing to strive towards achieving more goals in this regard.
In conclusion, The OHRC is pleased to extend its acknowledgment and appreciation to the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions for its contribution in organizing this Forum, and to all the participating parties and participants in the Forum.
