As part of the joint program implemented by the Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC in partnership with Omani Women’s Associations, an awareness lecture was held on child protection from neglect and abuse. The event was held at the headquarters of the Omani Women’s Association in Suwayq Governorate. The lecture was attended by a group of stakeholders and various targeted segments of the society.
The lecture aimed at promoting the right of the child to protection from neglect and abuse, introducing the legal and regulatory frameworks for the child protection, and understanding the procedures adopted to report abuse and neglect through the available means at the Ministry of Social Development and other concerned authorities. The lecture also presented the efforts of the OHRC, its role and contribution in this regard, while reflecting on some cases related to the child neglect and abuse, and the procedures maintained to address such cases.
During the lecture, Ms/ Khazina bint Muslim Al-Rahbiah from the OHRC gave an introduction to the awareness and education programs implemented by the Commission to reduce cases of Child abuse and neglect, and reflected on a number of articles of the Child Law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. She also introduced the attendees to ways of communicating with the committee, to report cases, and the measures and precautions that should be considered to reduce such cases. An awareness video clips were also played during the lecture.
Mr/ Imad bin Muhammad Al-Saidi from the Ministry of Social Development also gave a presentation on the mechanisms used in the Ministry of Social Development regarding child protection from abuse and neglect, indicators that can refer to the fact a child was exposed to abuse, contacts and reporting mechanisms, and cases addressed by child protection committees.
This lecture is a part of a series of lectures and seminars covering all Governorates of the Sultanate of Oman and is currently being implemented by the Ministry of Social Development and the OHRC to reduce this societal issue resulting from the Child neglect and abuse, assuring that children must be protected and cared for as dictated by laws, especially the Child Law.
