“Oman Human Right Commission” Participates in the Forum “Sophisticated with my Ethics” in Dhofar Governorate
The OHRC participated in the forum “Sophisticated with my Ethics” (Fifth Edition) whose events were held in Wilayat Salalah, Dhofar Governorate under the auspices of His Highness Sayyed Marwan bin Turki Al Said the Governor of Dhofar and organized by Omani Women’s Association in Salalah. During the forum, a team from the Commission presented two worksheets that discussed the establishment of the Commission and the Royal Decrees related to it, in addition to its mechanisms of monitoring and receiving complaints. The worksheets also covered the Commission’s role in replying to international reports, the awareness and education programs conducted by the Commission and means of communication with it. Furthermore, the team talked about the competencies of the commission represented in developing a national human rights strategy and following up on its implementation in coordination with all the competent authorities of human rights, following –up on protecting human rights and freedoms in the Sultanate of Oman according to the Basic Statute of the State, the international covenants, conventions ratified by the Sultanate of Oman and the applicable laws. The Commission’s competencies also include monitoring the observations in the field of human rights raised by foreign governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations in the Sultanate of Oman, coordinating with the competent authorities to verify and reply to those observations, in addition to providing the competent authorities in the State with consultation in the issues related to human rights and freedoms, contributing to preparing reports that address these issues, monitoring any violations or abuses related to human rights and helping to settle them. In addition, the OHRC conducts field visits to prisons, detention centers, hospitals and workers’ gatherings. The OHRC monitors human rights conditions in these places, receives and studies human rights complaints, and makes recommendations about them to the competent authorities in addition to following up on them, cooperating with the international mechanisms related to human rights, preparing reports and participating in meetings related to human rights at the regional or international levels, organizing conferences, courses, and seminars related to human rights in coordination with the competent authorities, and taking part in the regional and international conferences, events and meetings related to human rights.   During the participation, the team displayed one of the awareness films produced by the OHRC to eliminate the negligence of children, in addition to the communications received and monitored by the OHRC during this year, and the way of addressing them to reach settlements. While existing in Dhofar Governorate, the OHRC team provided several human rights consultations to the participants in the fields related to the competence of the Commission. The team also explained the communication means with the OHRC for all groups of society. The OHRC was represented by Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Sadi, the Director of Legal Affairs, and Salim bin Khalfan Al Roshdi, Head of the Awareness and Education Department.
