Oman Human Rights Commission Concludes its Participation in the Regional Conference on the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture in Beirut
The OHRC concluded its participation in the events of the Regional Conference on the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in the Middle East and North Africa Region, which was held in the Lebanese Capital Beirut The Conference was held to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of this Protocol. Representatives of the national mechanisms, government officials representing the ministries of justice and foreign affairs, and members of Parliaments in the Middle East and North Africa Region, in addition to representatives of the judiciary, civil society organizations and national human rights committees took part in the events of the Conference. The Conference aimed to urge the States Members from the Middle East in North Africa Region to join the Optional Protocol. The Conference sessions discussed the programs for building capabilities and taking additional measures to achieve the objectives of the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, promote and protect human rights, discuss taking effective measures to prevent torture and enhance the protection of individuals through mutual responsibility between the national measures and international mechanisms. The OHRC was represented by a delegation headed by Yasser bin Saeed Al- Dhuhli, a member of the OHRC, Salem bin Saif Al-Shuaili, Director of the Commission’s Chairman’s Office, Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Nadabi Head of the Public Relations Department of the OHRC.
