The Sultanate of Oman celebrated the Human Rights Day at Al-Bustan Palace Hotel. This celebration was under the auspices of his Excellency Shaikh Abdulmalek Abdullah Al-Khalily Minister of Justiceand attended by number of his Excellencies and Honorees on 10
of December . The Honorable Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Riyami , the Chairman of National Human Rights Commission(NHRC) said at the opening of the celebration that “10
of December of every year proclaims the Human Rights Day and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). It is the commitment that all states and peoples should adhere to in order to promote the respect of human rights”. He added that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos paid great attention to human rights in Oman. He also discussed NHRC achievements that have been undertaken locally and internationally. He mentioned that NHRC carried out more than forty-two awareness presentations at number of schools. The commission also held two human rights symposiums at the National Youth Committee and University of Nizwa and gave several awareness presentations at youth clubs, and military and security institutions in order to disseminate the culture of human rights as well as participating in several exhibitions such as Omani Press Week, Traffic Safety and Khareef Salalah Festival . Al-Riyami added that , on the international level ,NHRC participated effectively in most international events in relation to human rights and was granted the membershipof (APF) and the membership of (I.C.C). In addition,Dr. Abdullah Alashal, former Secretary-General of the National Council for Human Rights in Egypt, delivered a speech about the Human Rights Day where he discussed different aspects of human rights. About the human rights according to the Basic Statute of the State, Dr. Hussain Suleiman Assalmi, Vice-President of the German University of Technology(GUTECH) for Financial and Administrative Affairs ,presented on the role ofconstitution in the human rights , comparison between Basic Statute of State and other constitutions and the international conventions in relation to human rights. During the celebration, NHRC presented a documentary film about the commission’s achievements and activities.
During the celebration, Ms. Majeda Shikhan Al-Mamari , NHRC Member and the Chairman of Awareness Sub-Committee launched competition in relation to research and short films competition. This competition aims to educate society on human rights and duties and international conventions. It also aims to encourage society members to express their opinion about the human rights.
His Excellency: Ashikh: Abdulmalek Abdullah Al-Khalily was launched the Monitoring System and Complaints Guides. Monitoring system is a computerized program that receives complaints chronologically with specific numbering. Moreover , Dr. Rashid Hamed Al-Buloshi , NHRC General Secretary, explained about complaints guides contents which aims to help NHRC employees in the field of monitoring . It also aims to educate Omani Society about the commission’s procedures and organization of complaints files of all citizens and residents. In addition, it helps NHRC employees to develop their skills and improve their job performance. Complaints Guide includes NHRC definitions, ,objectives , mechanisms of work and strategies. It also includes NHRC specialization, receiving complaints procedures, monthly and annual reports and samples of forms which are used for receiving complaints.
