A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), headed by Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of the Commission, participated in the Ombudsmen Summit held in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan, under the theme: “Human Rights in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Responsibilities and Risks.”
The Summit featured extensive discussions and interactive sessions focusing on ways to safeguard digital rights amid the rapid technological transformation, as well as mechanisms for strengthening international cooperation among national human rights institutions, ombudsmen offices, and international partners to ensure that artificial intelligence technologies and digital transformation are utilized in the service of humanity and the protection of individuals’ fundamental rights.
During the Summit, the Chairman of the Commission presented an overview of the Sultanate of Oman’s pioneering experience in employing artificial intelligence applications across various human rights fields. He highlighted, in particular, the initiatives and digital systems adopted by the Sultanate of Oman to advance the rights to health and education and to enhance the quality of services provided to both citizens and residents alike.
He also outlined the existing cooperation between the Oman Human Rights Commission and relevant state institutions, emphasizing the importance of concerted national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and to build an integrated framework that strikes a balance between maximizing the opportunities offered by modern technologies and mitigating the risks and challenges emerging in the digital space.
