The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) participated in the Third Arab Dialogue on Business and Human Rights in Arab States, hosted by Amman, Jordan, with broad participation from representatives of human rights organizations, government entities, private sector institutions, and experts from across the Arab region.
The OHRC delegation was headed by Mr. Saud bin Salih Al Maawali, Vice Chairperson of the Commission. The dialogue featured in-depth discussions on mechanisms for promoting responsible business practices and ensuring that companies and commercial institutions adhere to international and national human rights standards. Participants also explored ways to integrate these principles into development and economic plans across the Arab region.
The Regional Dialogue aimed to facilitate the exchange of expertise and successful experiences among Arab countries and to strengthen partnerships between national human rights institutions and the business sector, with a view to developing practical recommendations that contribute to advancing justice and safeguarding human dignity across various economic fields.
As part of the Dialogue’s scientific programme and panel discussions, Ms. Shatha bint Abdulmajeed Al Zadjali, Director of the Organizations and International Relations Department at the Commission, presented a specialized paper that attracted considerable interest from participants. In her presentation, she highlighted the major global challenges currently facing the business sector, particularly in the agriculture and textile industries, and examined their direct and indirect impacts on human rights.
The paper also shed light on the sustained efforts undertaken by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Oman Human Rights Commission and in cooperation with relevant stakeholders, to develop strategic plans and policy directions aimed at protecting economic and social rights. Foremost among these efforts is the formulation of the National Human Rights Strategy, which provides a comprehensive framework for ensuring a fair and safe working environment that supports sustainable development and aligns with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
