Oman Human Rights Commission Conducts Field Visit to Assess the Impact of Oil Spill in Ras Madrakah

A specialised team from the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), led by its Chairperson, Professor Rashid bin Hamad Al-Balushi, conducted a field visit to Ras Madrakah and surrounding areas to assess the impact of an oil spill involving an oil tanker and review the measures taken to protect the environmental and health rights of the local community.

During the visit, the team assessed conditions on the ground and confirmed that residential areas had not been affected. It also checked the safety and suitability of food and seafood products for consumption and verified that residents’ daily lives were continuing without any direct health or environmental disruption.

The OHRC delegation also observed firsthand the sustained efforts of the relevant government authorities and institutions, including their prompt response to contain the spill, clean the beaches and protect the marine environment from potential harm.

The visit forms part of OHRC’s mandate to monitor matters affecting human rights, public health and safety, and the environment. It complements the Commission’s ongoing awareness efforts through its digital platforms to inform the public about the environmental and human rights implications of the incident.
