The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) implemented an intensive human rights awareness and education Programme throughout August in Dhofar Governorate, coinciding with the Khareef Dhofar 2026 activities. The Programme forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to promote a culture of human rights across the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
The Programme was implemented in collaboration with various institutions operating in Dhofar Governorate, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Social Development Committee in the Wilayat of Taqah, civil society organisations, and the Oman Special Olympics. This collaboration contributed to broadening the scope of field participation.
The Programme achieved tangible positive results, with more than 340 beneficiaries from various segments of society participating in the different activities, training workshops and educational Programmes delivered by the Commission. The campaign also saw the distribution of more than 2,500 awareness-raising and research publications, in addition to 104 educational wall posters distributed among various entities and institutions.
The publications distributed included research studies on human rights issues intended for researchers, booklets aimed at raising children’s awareness of issues such as abuse and bullying, as well as the Commission’s annual reports and publications introducing international conventions. Meanwhile, the educational wall posters focused on introducing the international conventions to which the Sultanate of Oman has acceded and highlighting the national protection mechanisms in place for women, children and persons with disabilities.
The Programme also included a series of training workshops and interactive activities held alongside the Ministry of Education’s summer Programme for school students this year, entitled “Summer… Learning and Innovation.” These activities included workshops on the role of the Oman Human Rights Commission in protecting and promoting children’s rights, conducted in cooperation with schools such as Al Saeediya School and Al Noor Girls’ School. They also included activities targeting children, such as “Colour and Learn Your Rights,” as well as activities on self-protection mechanisms conducted in cooperation with Bahja Omani Association for Orphans.
In addition, the Programme included specialised workshops for female guides at the Ashour Plain Scout Camp, as well as workshops for members of the Oman Special Olympics at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment. It also featured an expanded seminar aimed at promoting humanitarian and human rights work in cooperation with the Social Development Committee in the Wilayat of Taqah.
These activities and Programmes form part of the continued efforts of the Oman Human Rights Commission and constitute an implementation of its mandate to promote a culture of human rights among all segments of society, as stipulated in its system issued pursuant to Royal Decree No. (47/2026). This reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to and continued interest in strengthening the national human rights framework and embedding its principles among all members and institutions of society.
